About

Handmade BU is a craft fair and entrepreneurship opportunity at Boston University. This coming December will be the second incarnation of the wildly successful fair, which showcases student talent and builds business skills by providing BU students an affordable, physical space on campus to sell their fully handmade products. From knitware to original art, the scope of projects and level of talent at Handmade BU is truly astonishing. Handmade BU encourages buying local, and sustaining communities through intentional consuming.

This project was the brainchild of Ariana Katz (CAS ’12), who has been knitting complex, textured, silly, and political creations and sellng her wares for years wanted to extend the opportunity to other students, and build community between artists, students, and BU at large. She was later joined by Sarah Merriman (CAS ’12), who believes that baking for someone else feeds both the body and the soul, and wanted a way for crafty students to connect in a physical space-not just on the internet. Together they work to create charming, exciting chances for vendors (who can’t always afford the $100+ tabling fee at other fairs), and shoppers (who love things that are awesome.)

The first Handmade BU took place in February 18, 2011, and it filled the Boston University George Sherman Union with color, music, excited voices, and the inimitable energy of students watching their hard work pay off. Sarah and Ariana are excited to present the second installment of Handmade BU: A Craft Fair this semester, on December 2nd, which will feature live music, food, and crafts galore.
